A 19th Century pair of Medium Staffordshire Spaniel Style China Dogs. 

  • A matched medium pair of King Charles Spaniels. Very light part distressed hand decorated all under-glaze copper lustre and cream glaze
  • Being opposing they are a true pair. Both dogs stand 9-inches tall and is 6-inch long.
  • These pairs are also known as "Wally Dogs" and have become iconic pottery figurines decorating matlepieces since the 19th Century in England. They were typically made inpairs and symbolise loyalty, affection and protection.
  • Both bases are glazed with no production or factory stamps
  • Distressed Copper Lustre decoration was popular during the period 1870-1900 These have very light decoration, being mainly cream and are probably earlier
  • The left hand dog has a glazed firing crack running 2-inches aong the from seem as shown. The right hand dog contains a fired clay piece which rattles if shaken, likely from when the firing vent was formed on the rear wal.
  • Date range 1830-1860
  • Very nice aged patina with fine irregular glaze crazing and pretty faces. Deep relief molded coat details makes this pair stand out..
