A 19th Century pair of curled tail Staffordshire spaniel style china dogs.
- A 10-inch tall matched pair of King Charles Spaniels. Hand decorated in dark umber brown and black lustre, almost plain rears.
- Being opposing they are a true pair. Both dogs stand 10-inches tall and is 9-inch long.
- Press moulded with no separation between the front legs and body and they also sport decorated curved or curled tails
- Two small firing vent holes on the rear and one on the base plate
- These pairs are also known as "Wally Dogs" and have become iconic pottery figurines decorating mantlepieces since the 19th Century in England. They were typically made inp airs and symbolise loyalty, affection and protection.
- Both bases are part glazed with no production or factory stamps
- The single mould shape was popular during the period 1840-1870
- The right hand dog has stable firing cracks from shrinkage of the base plate during firing The glaze has a good antique patina with some soot inclusions. There is moderate ware to the glaze over the faces where the figurines have been stroked.
- Date range 1840-1870
- The decorators work gives this pair a slightly startled or alert appearance. Very nice examples.
